  • Paul Boulton

Senior Engineering Manager for Terminals, Gatwick Aiport

I started at Gatwick in 2016 as the Senior Engineering Manager for Terminals where I’m responsible for many of the engineering assets within the airports main passenger areas. This includes all toilet facilities, walls, ceilings, windows, lighting, electrical services, water supply, plumbing services, doors, roofs, lifts, escalators and passenger walkways…. My direct team manages numerous sub-contractors such as KONE, OTIS and MITIE to deliver high quality and cost effective maintenance whilst focussing on causing minimum disruption to the airport operation and maintaining the best possible passenger experience.

As you can imagine we are an extremely busy department where no 2 days are the same which adds to the interest and excitement. It’s one of things for me which makes Gatwick such an amazing and diverse place to work.

I started my career as an Electrical Apprentice in 1986 at Kraft Foods, Banbury, Oxfordshire where I followed a 4 year EITB technical apprenticeship programme. I look back fondly remembering the 1st year ‘off the job’ training, subsequent 3 years within the factory and numerous log book entries which ultimately led to successfully securing a full time Electrical Technician position upon completion. My career has taken many twists and turns but I’m forever grateful for the solid practical grounding my apprenticeship gave me which has without doubt assisted my progression over the years.

    Engineering Apprenticeship, Gatwick Airport

Liberty is a second year apprentice on the engineering apprenticeship scheme at Gatwick airport.

“I am currently in my second year working on my second placement at the airport as well as studying for a BTEC and NVQ. The first year of the apprenticeship was spent at college studying a wide range of courses including maths, electronics, hand tools, machinery, electrical installation, pneumatics and hydraulics, CAD, technical drawing and health and safety. This allowed me to learn skills which would aide me on my placements at work.

My second year has given me the chance to put what I have learnt into action as well as learning more skills from the technicians. I enjoy the opportunities the apprenticeship gives me and the fact that no day is the same due to the wide breath of jobs that are worked on and the various projects offered to us to get involved with. Working at the airport is like working with a family, everyone is there to help you should you need it.

I decided an apprenticeship was for me as I wanted to continue studying and learning more, but I wanted the experience and context to what I was learning which I felt I couldn’t get from going straight to university. At work there are so many learning opportunities with various training such as ESR to help in the working environment.”

    Engineering Apprenticeship, Gatwick Airport

I am now working on site at Gatwick after my first year which was spent at college, where I was building up my engineering knowledge and competency. The course was very diverse and allowed me develop the key skills such as maths, electrical safety, hydraulics, pneumatics and mechanical systems all of which make up important aspects of the job role. I personally enjoyed the machining skills we learnt in the workshop as I like to work hands on and this taught me about working to fine tolerances and precision.

For me personally this was the ideal job, it combines all the things that interest me on a technical level but allows me to learn in a much more hands on way which suits my personal style. This apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to gain skills and qualifications down the line that I would typically have to go through the university route to obtain, yet I’m free of student debt and earning all the while.

There are so many different aspects to the roles at Gatwick that by moving around the different sections you pick up so much experience, both in technical knowledge and being an effective team member.  I can’t wait to keep progressing and watch how my skills grow in the coming years
