Green Careers Hour

Green Careers Hour

Green Careers Hour – A broadcast for young people in schools and colleges

The Careers & Enterprise Company supported Learn Live to curate a virtual “Green Careers Hour” at 10am on Thursday 4th November.

The hour featured employers from across the economy that provide “green jobs” (i.e. employment in activity that directly contributes to – or indirectly supports – the achievement of the UK’s net zero emissions target and other environmental goals).

The aim of the broadcast was to demystify what is meant by “green jobs” (both for young people and those advising them) and to inspire students to consider the different pathways and future careers options that they open up, including HE, technical and apprenticeship routes.

Students were able to attend online either live on the day or to access the content through a recording. Register now as a student, teacher or parent to gain understanding of a significant growth area for jobs and the economy.

  • Ørsted

    https://orsted.co.uk/

Ørsted’s vision is a world that runs entirely on green energy. We develop, construct and operate offshore and onshore wind farms, solar farms and energy storage facilities, bioenergy plants and provide energy products to our customers. A decade ago, we initiated our transformation from a black to a green energy company as DONG Energy. Since then, we’ve reduced our coal consumption by 91% and decided to fully phase out coal in 2023. We’ve become a global leader in offshore wind and have installed enough capacity to power more than 19 million people. Our ambition is to raise this number to 30 million by 2025. By 2030, our ambition is to have installed approx. 50 GW of renewable energy capacity. In 2017, we divested our upstream oil and gas business, thereby completing our transformation to become fully dedicated to green energy. Our transformation means that we’ve become too green for our name. DONG, originally short for Danish Oil and Natural Gas, is no longer an accurate description of who we are, or who we want to be. So now we’re Ørsted. Learn more about our history as DONG Energy on linkedin.com/DONGEnergy

We will not compromise on standards which is why we carry out more than 400,000 tests per year on our drinking water. We continue to invest and this year will be spending more than £1 billion to improve our networks and infrastructure – our pipes, sewerage treatment and clean water treatment plants, which are some of the biggest and most advanced sites in Europe. And we will spend the same again next year in our challenge to make sure that if our customers had a choice, they would choose Thames Water. Planning for the future is a key part of our strategy and we already generate enough electricity to power more than 55,000 homes. We also understand the importance of speaking to our youngest customers through our sustainability and education programs in schools and effectively manage and maintain a number of nature reserves. Above all this, Thames Water values its staff as number one and we can now look forward to welcoming you to our team.

Richard Parks – Community Education Team @ Anglian Water

Worked for Anglian Water for over 9 years in the Community Education Team. What this involves has changed over the years but ranges from running lessons in primary schools showing how we clean over 1.2 billion litres of water every day and recycle a billion litres of sewage. Working with Secondary students to improve their key skills which they need for the world of work and preparing students for life in work. I like to say I know a little bit about all aspects of the company and have students I have worked with have been directly employed by the company. The drive is always looking to the future and Anglian Water has pledged to become net zero by 2030 and all employees will need to do their bit to get us there.
