  • Phoebe Oakes

    Paralegal Apprentice, Addleshaw Goddard

At college I studied Law, Religious Studies and Sociology. I applied for university and was successful in getting all five offers and I thought University was the route I wanted to take into a legal career. I was not aware at the time that legal apprenticeships were available and could lead me to the same place as a university graduate. Through doing research I discovered that I could do a qualification and work at the same time, which has been hugely beneficial as the work I do at AG has contributed to my skill set which I can use to further my studies.

Choosing an apprenticeship was definitely the best option for me as I am able to gain experience in an international law firm and have had the opportunity to work with some high profile clients and attend client meetings, which I would not have had the chance to do at this stage if I had gone to University. The lectures are one day a week and then I work in the Manchester office Tuesday to Friday which gives me the chance to implement what I have learnt into my working week. I also recently attended a Northern Powerhouse Apprenticeship Summit where I got the chance to hear talks from MP’s and CEO’s. This is just one example of great opportunities that are available when doing an
    apprenticeship.

  • Jake Foster

    Project Coordinator, Unilever

My name is Jake Foster and I am 20 years old and have an Associate Project Manager with Unilever. I am based in Port sunlight on the Wirral. I started my Apprentice in September 2017.

In my current role I am a Project Coordinator within Digital Research & Development. During this role I am responsible for rolling out IT projects to users to across the globe. I really enjoy my role and has given me so many opportunities to learn and develop. I am also an outreach ambassador and Youth Apprentice Ambassador which allows me to visit schools and events to raise awareness of apprenticeships.

Alongside my day to day role I do my learning through an online training provider which is flexible and allows me to manage my time better. I have access to a wide range of webinars, podcasts and online training material along with face to face workshops. All these platforms give me a great platform to learn. I have to complete a series of mock questions, assignments and reflective accounts which allow me to demonstrate the skills I am learning during my apprenticeship.

I chose an apprenticeship because the idea of earning while learning was attractive furthermore, have 2 years’ experience in a FTSE 100 company is vital to my progression as a project manager. I have also obtained a APM PMQ project management qualification.

  • Becky Butler

    Broadcast Engineering Apprentice, BBC

I joined the BBC at the end of September, so I’m in my first year out of three as it’s a degree apprenticeship. I came here straight after doing my A Levels in Maths, Physics and IT. I’m originally from the Black Country (West Midlands) but I’ve now moved to Cardiff for the job.

I’m currently on placement in the Technology department, where my days vary quite a lot. I shadow engineers, fix things in the workshop, spend time in other departments and more. When I’m at University, I study Broadcast Engineering.

  • Susan Machin

    Broadcast Engineering Apprentice, BBC

I’m currently in my first year of a three year degree apprenticeship with the BBC. My time is split between university study periods and work placements with various design and engineering departments throughout BBC and my base is Salford. I joined the apprenticeship after working full time for over three years in an admin role. I attended college for a year after high school, but found the continuation of full time study wasn’t for me so looked to working full time.

After 3 years I decided I wanted to continue my studies so I enrolled onto an Access to Higher Education course, whilst working part-time which was to be my pathway into university, however I was lucky enough to land a place onto this apprenticeship which allows me to not only further my education but to also work in a real-time working environment, which I have already had a taste for and know I enjoy.

  • Sarah Naylor

GBS Europe Executive Workforce specialist, working in HR, IBM

My name is Sarah Naylor and I am from Newbury, Berkshire. I currently work between the IBM Hursley site in Winchester, and the Southbank office in London. I embarked on the HR Management apprenticeship pathway upon completion of my A-levels when I was 18, and alongside the job, study at BPP University, London.

As part of the HR pathway, I have had the opportunity to work in both generalist and specialist roles, most recently working as a European Workforce Specialist for IBM’s Global Business Services. I am responsible for working on our executive succession and development, alongside ad hoc projects including annual performance reviews and
promotion to executive events. My time at IBM so far has enabled me to get experience needed to become a well-rounded HR professional – . I feel like I can really make a difference at work as I have a real job role with real responsibilities.

So far at my time in IBM, I have been fortunate enough to win a highly commended award for South East Apprentice of the Year and experience European travel where I recently flew to Hamburg to take part in the running of the new-executive event and executive performance review. I hope to continue to do great things with the help of a fantastic
support network around me, who continuously help me to open new doors and opportunities as part of my development as an apprentice. I would always advise anyone who is considering an apprenticeship to dare to do something different. Don’t follow the crowd – do what is right for you. I was ready to get into a corporate environment and start to build my career – it hasn’t been as scary as I thought it would be, and I have made some great friends along the way!

  • Tomas Seniut

Network Engineering Apprentice – Deployment Analyst, Accenture

As a naturally curious individual, I always wanted to see how things work and fit together. I always considered myself a ‘hands-on’ learner, so an apprenticeship scheme was the most appealing route to start my career. Having an opportunity to observe how experts in the field operate is incredible and develops you not only as a professional, but also as an individual.

Since joining Accenture, I’ve greatly developed my soft skills and technical understanding through my role as a Deployment analyst in Infrastructure, as well as having the opportunity to study for my degree. This apprenticeship is a perfect place to learn what you truly like to do and which career path is right for you.

My favourite part of the job is the variety of tasks and the ever-changing setting. While I’m working on clients’ needs, I’m constantly becoming closer to my team which creates a very fun and engaging environment!

  • Grace Handley

    Advanced Engineering Apprentice, BAE Systems

Every day I come into BAE Systems, my work does not feel like just a job; I am given the chance to face evolving challenges, protect lives and produce meaningful results, and I don’t believe I could get that feeling at any other company. The Aerospace Engineer Degree Apprenticeship is extremely varied; I have worked in offices, hangars, labs etc. in different placements. The majority of my current role is office based as Aerospace Engineering consists of a lot of problem solving; this can include looking on databases to check numbers/functions/maintenance manuals, completing some maths or physics problems yourself or networking with others to find the solutions to the issues. It is very team based, so it is extremely rare you will be working on a problem yourself; this allows you to work to everyone’s strengths when devising a solution. From time to time you have the opportunity to travel, including to UK RAF bases or even internationally to meet with customers or partners.

  • Lucas Benson

    Advanced Engineering Apprentice, BAE Systems

My Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship with BAE Systems has made my dreams turn to reality and allowed me to develop my skills further than I ever imagined. It has enabled me to achieve a level 3 NVQ and HNC in Aeronautical Engineering and given me the aspiration to complete a Higher National Diploma. My apprenticeship has given me a variety of experiences from the design and implementation of manufacturing cost-saving ideas within the company, helping those less fortunate than me through working with the Princes Trust and the design, manufacture and testing of a rehabilitation device currently being implemented into Birmingham Hospital. I have had a role to play as a fitter on cutting-edge aircraft programmes such as Typhoon, F-35 and Hawk alongside some of the greatest engineers in the field. I am now part of the team responsible for developing the technologies, tools and processes that are going to be used to manufacture combat aircraft of the future

  • Rebecca Bennett

    Client Relationship Manager, Mattioli Woods

Rebecca joined Mattioli Woods in July 2017 after completing A-levels in business studies, ICT and dance at Runshaw College in Lancashire. Choosing an apprenticeship as she felt university wasn’t the right route for her, Rebecca joined the Mattioli Woods scheme as it allowed her to learn and receive a qualification while gaining experience in a real-life working environment and earning a salary.

After successfully completing her apprenticeship, Rebecca now holds a level two qualification in financial services, and has passed her CII CF1 exam. She now intends to complete more exams, and is currently studying for the CII R01.

Rebecca’s role at Mattioli Woods involves the day-to-day administration of clients’ financial affairs, dealing with things such as payments, investments, benefits and property work.

Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys spending time with friends and family. She also dances, a passion she has pursued since she was a young child.
