    Business Administration Apprentice, Balfour Beatty

    After completing my GCSE’s I successfully applied and joined Balfour Beatty as a business admin apprentice in 2016. I worked in a logistics team studying a level 2 NVQ in Business Administration. During my first year as an apprentice I had multiple job roles, becoming progressively more managerial. Once my course was complete I was accepted into the Open University; working on a Level 6 apprenticeship studying an Honours Degree in Chartered Business Management (BA Hons).

    So far I have worked in logistics, plant breakdowns, and product innovation. I now have a Business Development role working in between our Modular Business and Mobilisation Hub. Having experienced 2 ½ years of being an apprentice, and working up from my original role, I can say that I have started to become more of an advocate of development and empowerment. I am heavily involved with the Emerging Talent team, helping with events, presentations, intakes etc. I am very active on Yammer (Our internal social network) and am a #MyC ambassador for the business where I encourage others to share ideas and thoughts on all sorts of topics to continually improve the way we do things.

    I am currently 13 months into my degree and hope to Graduate within the next three years. I’m still unsure of where I want to end up in the business but I know that with my degree and the level of support Balfour Beatty gives me I should be able to go down whatever route I chose.

    Civil Engineering Apprentice, Balfour Beatty

    My route into Balfour Beatty was through studying Engineering at college as an alternative to A-Levels. I joined Balfour Beatty in August 2018 as a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice. Through this apprenticeship I get the opportunity to study one day a week at university and the rest of the week working. Over the course of five years of on the job training and university study, I will have achieved a BEng in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.

    My role at Balfour Beatty is Apprentice Site Engineer. This requires me to spend most of my time on site, with some of my time spent in the office. Within eight months of working at Balfour Beatty I have had the opportunity to go on a range of training and network with the wider business. I have been given various responsibilities on and off site; this could be anything from using surveying equipment, to being responsible for the Health and Safety Dashboard. I get the opportunity to visit schools and colleges to talk about apprenticeships which helps me to develop my presentation and communication skills whilst promoting apprenticeships.

    Civil Engineering Apprentice, Balfour Beatty

    In August 2018, after completing my A-levels (Maths, Business, PE), I joined Balfour Beatty as a Civil Engineer Apprentice. I’m seven months into my role and I’m now completing a BEH degree in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering which will take me five years to complete. Within my first seven months I’ve attended a number of training courses such as ‘Setting out for Engineers’, which has helped me improve skills needed for my role, along with university study and on-the-job training.

    In my time at Balfour Beatty I’ve worked mainly with the operations team, but I have also had experience with the procurement side of things. This, along with the monthly training we receive (one of which being on commercial aspects of the business), has contributed to a wider understanding of how the business works and how I can contribute in my role. I am currently on site as an engineer, but have also spent time in the office performing engineering duties. As an apprentice I feel as though I have definitely chosen the right career path. I’m receiving beneficial formal training, but also have opportunities to use what I am being taught and shown practically in the workplace.

    I hope to complete my degree within the coming years, and develop further becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and use all that I am being taught to contribute positively to my current project.

    Role Summary

    Reporting to the General Manager, the Front of House Manager is responsible for the overall day-to-day operation of the reception / office department whilst ensuring all hotel, conference and events bookings are optimise and logged accordingly. The is a proactive role which requires the FOH to build strong relationships with the entire Mill Farm team.

    Main Duties (but not limited to)

    Oversee the day-to-day running of the reception/office department and devise a weekly departmental rota in line with business demands.

    Provide a high standard of customer service, by ensuring every customer is treated in a friendly, professional, and helpful manner and that all customer enquiries are dealt with in a positive way.

    Checking guests in and out of the hotel ensuring correct payments are taken as per the company’s standard of procedure.

    Action any closure of room type or property level in third party distribution channels including GDS provider.

    Action any amendments to Best Available Rate Strategy, third party distribution channels and GDS provider.

    To ensure all maintenance issues observed and reported are logged accordingly.

    To adhere to AFC Fylde sales procedure when selling tickets, memberships, and merchandise.

    To ensure policies, procedures, reporting systems, handovers, logs, and incident reports are reported and communicated accordingly.

    Coordinate all enquires for residential Christmas and New Year packages ensuring that all reservations adhere to defined policies regarding deposits and prepayments deadlines and all necessary correspondence is sent to guests.

    Ensure events and conferences are booked in properly and function sheets have been issued accordingly.

    About You

    Previous experience as a Hotel Front of House Manager or in a similar role.

    Competent in the use of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

    Excellent analytical skills.

    Good knowledge of third-party channels, GDS, and Property Managements Systems.

    Good problem solving and interpersonal skills.

    Highly knowledgeable of the hotel industry and tourism in the local area.
