National Apprenticeship Week with Northern Devon NHS Trust

Want to know more about the exciting apprenticeship opportunities at Northern Devon NHS Trust?

This broadcast focused on Tom’s journey as apprentices and why he chose an apprenticeship instead of continuing in full time education. The theme for this broadcast was focused on the apprentice experience to inspire students in school and college to look at this route into the workplace.

The live chat is always open next to the video player so feel free to leave us a question or comment and we’ll get it forwarded to the team from Northern Devon NHS Trust.

 About Northern Devon NHS Trust

Across Devon, our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support people’s independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home. In any 24 hours our health and social care community teams visit around 300 patients in their own homes to help them rehabilitate after illness or injury. At any one time, they are overseeing around 2500 people’s care. Our domiciliary care service, Devon Cares, works in partnership with high quality local care agencies to provide social care to people in their own homes. We are working hard to join up health and social care, improving the way people get home from hospital or receive support to remain independent in their own homes.

Business Apprentice, Northern Devon NHS Trust

“Who said university was the only option to study a degree?”

Working as a Business Administration apprentice for the NHS has without doubt been the best decision I made since leaving school in 2015.  I started as an apprentice at 16 and have been able to gain invaluable real life skills and work experience whilst furthering my education and achieving recognised qualifications.

During my time within the trust, I have studied towards diplomas in Business and Administration and I’m now currently studying towards a degree in Business Management as a higher apprentice.  In my opinion, having the opportunity to study whilst gaining paid work experience is far more beneficial than full time education.  In 4 years’ time I will have completed my degree, but also have 7 years of employment from a recognised employer and be on the right path to fulfilling my aspirations of a career in Operational/General Management, all by the age of 24.

Working within the NHS has taught me vital skills and the importance of team work and effective communication to ensure we are ‘delivering high quality and sustainable services that support the health and wellbeing of all our patients.’  I have received a tremendous amount of support both towards my work and studies, which has allowed me to develop from a school leaving, into a mature young confident adult, ready to face all life challenges.  I would like to continue working within the NHS and continue progressing, developing and learning from my wiser peers.
