About Healthcare Science
Healthcare scientists – sometimes known as clinical scientists – work at the cutting edge of medicine, researching and developing new treatments and equipment. Most of their work is done in laboratories, although some does involve patient care.
Clinical Scientist (Senior Physicist)
Martha works as a Clinical Scientist in Medical Physics at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. She completed the Scientist Training Programme and now works in the field of Radiation Protection. This involves making sure that staff are safe while working with radiation in hospitals, dental practices and vets. Another important part of the job is ensuring that radiation doses received by patients in radiology are as low as possible while making sure that doctors can still see enough information to make a diagnosis.
Clinical Scientist (Bioinformatics)
Sandra works as a Clinical Scientist in Bioinformatics at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. She completed the Scientist Training Programme and now works in the field of Scientific Computing. This involves developing software that for example, manipulates and summarizes data to allow clinical staff to make better decisions, or allows staff to perform their duties more efficiently. She is also involved in research projects that involve using Artificial Intelligence to help in the diagnosis of Cancer as well as collecting, storing and sharing data securely with other researchers.
Trainee Clinical Scientist
Adnan works as trainee Clinical Scientist in Medical Physics at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. He has completed the Practitioners Training Programme, qualifying as a Nuclear Medicine technologist and is now currently undertaking the Science Training Programme in Medical Physics (2nd Year). The programme involves undertaking work-based as well as academic training in order to pick up the essential skills and experience required to qualify as a Clinical Scientist.
