We’ve come a long way since our founder, Thomas Barnardo set up a ‘ragged school’ to help disadvantaged children in 1867.
We don’t abandon children because of who they are or what they’ve done. We listen to them, fight for their rights and do whatever it takes to protect and support them – because we believe that all children have the right to a happy and healthy life. Read more about our values. At a time when more young people need specialist help with complex issues like sexual abuse, mental health problems and serious violence, our work is more vital than ever. Times have changed and we’ve changed with them, but our belief in the potential of every child remains. Because this is who we are.
From climate change, to the increasing use of technology, to the looming implications of Brexit. One in eight children had a mental health condition, more than 4 million were growing up in poverty, almost 100,000 were in the care system, and exploitation and violence had affected too many young lives. It was against this backdrop that the global COVID-19 crisis struck.

he need to support the UK’s vulnerable children and young people is greater and more urgent now than ever. In 2019–20, Barnardo’s supported work with 358,800 children, young people, parents and carers, across more than 800 services and partnerships throughout the UK, thanks to our 7,822 paid colleagues and around 14,000 volunteers.

Of our service users, 94% said they always felt respected, 92% said they always felt listened to, 88% said that the support was always helpful, and 85% said that they had a say in the decisions made about their support.

Hello, My name is Kells, I’m about to turn 20 but as a non-verbal quadriplegic, my life really began when I was 6, joined the Barnardo’s community and was introduced to assistive technology. My eye gaze activated computer enables me to communicate, have an opinion and have my say on issues of the day – issues that impact upon my life. Various groups at Barnardo’s have built up my confidence and taught me to be assertive.

It was at Barnardo’s that I first felt that someone wanted to hear my views, to listen to them and to take them on board. For the first time I could see a future for myself. In Barnardo’s I feel very much part of a team moving forward together.

    The £16.2M Skills for Employers and Employees (SEE) project will provide training programmes targeted at business in key sectors across North Wales. The project aims to support 7,000 employees across the region which will help develop key skills needed to grow the regional economy.

    This a project in partnership with Coleg Cambria and WEA Cymru and builds on the success of other ESF programmes such as the Dyfodol project.

    Given the unique nature of the census ONS need to have some flexibility to react to any situation that may arise.  To support this need, we have developed mobile officer roles. These roles will be assigned to a mobile team, managed by a mobile team leader, and will require travel within a team to one or several locations across England and Wales where additional resources are required.

    As census mobile officer, in an assigned working area, you’ll be part of a team of up to 12 census officers, reporting to a census team leader. The main purpose of your role is to encourage the people in your area to complete their Census 2021 online questionnaire. You’ll receive a daily workload of addresses that have yet to submit a census questionnaire, which require a follow up visit to support and encourage completion. You’ll help residents understand the importance of the census, and the vital role they have in making it a success. You’ll help them overcome any objections or barriers they may have to completing, either helping them yourself or referring them to available support. You’ll be assisting people to complete their questionnaires, either on the doorstep or at completion events. You’ll work with the census engagement managers to support wider engagement at community events as required.

    Personal Learning Account

    The Personal Learning Account provides you with a way of accessing a wide range of free and flexible training.

    These courses allow you to gain new skills and qualifications that employers want – helping you to progress in your current career or open up new job opportunities.

    You can study these courses around your current job and family commitments with a range of locations and dates available.

    To be eligible for training through the Personal Learning Account, you must meet at least one of the following criteria, and be:

    • Employed (including self-employed) and earning under £26,000
    • A furloughed worker, including anyone who has accessed or is accessing the UK Government Job Retention Scheme (which runs until December 2020) or the Job Support Scheme (in operation from 1st November 2020)
    • On a zero hours contract
    • An agency staff
    • At risk of being made redundant

    We have a wide range of courses that cover a variety of different sectors.

    Alongside courses taught at the college, we also have a range of online courses available. These may be a mixture of online and social-distanced practical work, and some courses can be started at any time.

Over time, you’ll help them become more independent. There is also some personal care involved with these roles.

    Our home operates 24/7 and shifts are organised well in advance and worked on a rota basis. Shifts will include evenings, weekends and sleep-ins.
