Our school has high aspirations for all our students and is committed to providing excellent careers advice and guidance.
Our students gain first-hand experience of the world of work and learn, with support, how to make important decisions in their education and careers. We provide impartial and independent careers guidance for our students encouraging them to explore many different career pathways.
Students begin dedicated careers lessons from Year 8 when they make their option choices and can research subject choices and the links to different career opportunities.
In Year 9, this research continues using online resources and individual profiling intended to allow students to highlight their personality development and subjects they are most interested in. Presentation skills are tested here by students sharing their research with the class.
Year 10 and 12 students have the opportunity for a work experience week (Year 10 in March or April and Year 12 in July), the careers lessons focus on the challenge of finding a placement, and understanding employer expectations. Year 12 students are also encouraged to take up every opportunity for work experience throughout the year outside of term time.
Years 11, 12 and 13 students will have individual careers guidance linked to making their post 16 and post 18 option choices along with lessons themed on CV writing, interview techniques and completing application forms delivered by our Careers Advisor. For Year 12 students there are intensive careers courses aimed at competing university entrance application. They will experience mock interviews and a Careers Fair in school attended by businesses, Higher Education Universities and vocational Colleges
Students attend many career-related events and visits to businesses and Higher Education institutions to encourage the ethos of ‘aim higher’. There is a very professional programme of career breakfasts for Years 12 and 13 students. For Oxbridge entrants and those wishing to follow careers in Medicine, there are planned tutorials to prepare them for highly qualified careers.
To develop awareness of employability skills, we have built and maintained relationships with employers and the professional community, forging links and partnerships between Education and Business.
2015/16 saw 220 Year 10 students at 190 different work placements, a highlight of which was 10 students subsequently being offered apprenticeships mostly as a direct result of their work experience.
All Year 12 students gained some exciting placements within industries such as Aerospace Engineering, cyber security, prosthetic laboratories, banking and finance.
