As part of Doncaster Careers Week, Opportunities Doncaster arranged a suite of Live Broadcasts working with local employers in a range of different sectors to showcase the diverse range of careers that are available within Doncaster. The broadcast was pre-scripted with targeted questions about Apprenticeships and engineering.
The live broadcasts give schools the opportunity to interact live, by simply registering on the link provided. This is a highly proven method and gives schools a great opportunity to educate students and inform in relation to Careers, Advice and guidance,
The live broadcast is evidence of a meaningful employee encounter which supports the school in meeting Gatsby Benchmark 5. The broadcast is a great opportunity for students to develop employability skills such as; communicating with an employer and an gives them an exposure to the world of work.

After completing a teaching degree, Tom realised that a future in this profession was not for him. Age 22, he made the decision to pursue a career in engineering, and applied for an apprenticeship with Cementation Skanska in our machine workshop.
Tom’s role involves using a range of machinery in the manufacturing process, including lathes, milling machines and CNC equipment, from drawing through to completion.
Tom attends Doncaster college one day a week and enjoys being able to apply his learning, practically in the workplace.
Tom recently won the Metals Industry Apprentice of the Year Award, a fantastic achievement.
Apprentice Plant Fitter, Skanska
Harrison’s interest in the role stemmed from his enthusiasm in engineering, and living close to the Cementation Skanska site at Bentley Works, he was keen to find out what opportunities were available. This led to Harrison successfully applying to become an Apprentice Plant Fitter in 2016.
He has benefitted from the guidance and mentoring he received from experienced colleagues, while studying for a Level 3 qualification in construction plant/machinery maintenance.

This role is within our E&P – LV discipline where we provide LV design for resignalling projects, level crossings, S&C Renewals and conduct LV site surveys for the various projects we do.
In this role, you will undertake LV designs which include; conducting site surveys, drawing production using CAD software and making electrical calculations using modelling software. You will also write design reports for GRIP stages 1-5 and apply for DNO utility connections and alterations.
