After completing a teaching degree, Tom realised that a future in this profession was not for him. Age 22, he made the decision to pursue a career in engineering, and applied for an apprenticeship with Cementation Skanska in our machine workshop.
Tom’s role involves using a range of machinery in the manufacturing process, including lathes, milling machines and CNC equipment, from drawing through to completion.
Tom attends Doncaster college one day a week and enjoys being able to apply his learning, practically in the workplace.
Tom recently won the Metals Industry Apprentice of the Year Award, a fantastic achievement.
Harrison’s interest in the role stemmed from his enthusiasm in engineering, and living close to the Cementation Skanska site at Bentley Works, he was keen to find out what opportunities were available. This led to Harrison successfully applying to become an Apprentice Plant Fitter in 2016.
He has benefitted from the guidance and mentoring he received from experienced colleagues, while studying for a Level 3 qualification in construction plant/machinery maintenance.
