Network Rail Electrical Safety Campaign
Network Rail Electrical Safety Campaign
This broadcast is available for 11 +
Since 2016, three school aged children have lost their lives, whilst sixteen children have suffered major life changing injuries whilst trespassing on the train tracks. There has been an increase of trespass on or near overhead line equipment within railway depots and sidings. Trespassing on the railway network is a growing problem!
Network Rail along with the Train Operating Companies and Freight Operating Companies are responsible for keeping people safe. We take this responsibility very seriously, so we do all we can to raise awareness of how and why YOU need to be safe and stay away from the railway tracks. Whilst we can control how we manage our assets and our own people, we have less direct control over how members of the public including those who travel as passengers and local communities who live near our depots and sidings behave near our railway network.
DID YOU KNOW ELECTRICITY CAN JUMP??
You do not even have to touch a cable to be electrocuted.
25,000 volts of electricity can jump from overhead cables and shock you.
The best way to stay safe is to stay off the railway.
PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM THE TRAIN TRACKS!
Nearly half of the UK rail network is now electrified – and more than 30%uses a high voltage third rail to power the train.
The only way to avoid stepping on this hidden danger is NOT TO STEP ON THE TRAIN TRACK!
The power running is 25,000 volts – this is 100 times stronger than your supply at home.
The electricity is always switched on and tragically our hard-hitting statistics show that:
90% of people die when they’re struck by it.
10% are left with life-changing injuries, including burns and amputations; and that’s not to mention the emotional scars that will be left behind.
DID YOU KNOW?
During the first month of the Government’s Covid-19 lockdown, 1,024 trespass incidents were recorded. These incidents disrupted vital train services.
The railway helps to transport people, and vital supplies like food and medicines. Trespassing disrupts the delivery of these essential services which may affect you.
In 2019/2020, TRESPASSING led to trains being delayed for 399,874 minutes which cost the rail industry and British taxpayer £37 million pounds.
