We’re excited to be hiring a Marine Engineer Trainee to join our growing team. This role is only available to people eligible to work as part of the Government’s Kickstart Scheme.
What’s the kickstart scheme?
Kickstart offers an opportunity of a 6-month work placement (25 hours a week), accessible to young people aged 16-24 who are in receipt of Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll work on the design, development, and productionization of cutting-edge commercial autonomous systems, with a focus on marine apparatus and equipment.
You’ll be Conducting research and tests to inform various aspects of the design including structure, propulsion, electrical, and hydrodynamic mechanics.
You will work collaboratively with team members throughout the entire design lifecycle, drafting design requirements, producing and implementing designs and test procedures, and conducting Quality Control Analysis.
You’ll maintain and extend existing features, as well as work with the rest of the development team to resolve design concerns, as well as development and testing processes.
You’ll be laser-focused on quality and user experience, researching new features and soliciting customer input.
We’d like you to focus your initial efforts on assessing design requirements in order to develop a new design in addition to putting in-place adequate quality control processes to assess the product performance, safety and structural integrity.
You will work towards defining the proper maritime test conditions as well as sequences and phases of test operations.
You will contribute opinions on a range of topics, from development practices to product strategy and roadmap.

Job requirements
You will need:
A background in either Fluids Mechanics, materials and structures, propulsion, system integration.
Intermediate to expert-level background using CAD software in producing system layouts and detailed drawings and schematics.
Intermediate to expert-level in a computational software, such as MATLAB and Simulink, for designing applied marine Control & Automation and Marine Electrical system.
Willingness and ability to undertake theoretical and practical research with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to conduct analytical, environmental, operational, and performance studies in order to develop designs for marine equipment such as the propulsion systems, engines, pumps.
Ability to think creatively and be innovative with meticulous attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
Ability to cope with new demands and new problems and to work with deadlines with self-motivation.
Excellent communication and team working skills with the ability to work with and influence others within a culture of Continuous Improvement.
Strong IT skills including experience of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams and be willing to go beyond the call of duty.
Excellent telephone manner that is courteous and empathetic as well as experience working in customer service, ideally in an online retail environment.
This role is home-based (UK only) and you will need to supply your own laptop with a high-speed internet connection.
What are the working hours?
You’ll work 25 hours per week. The times will be agreed between us upon joining.
