Rail Safety LIVE 2019 Subtitled Version

Rail Safety LIVE 2019 – Subtitled Version

Rail Safety LIVE was a live streamed event that was broadcast to thousands across the UK during Rail Safety Week (24th – 30th June 2019).

The live event focused on rail safety, the dangers on and near the railway and key safety messages to help keep your young people safe. The broadcast featured members of Network Rail, British Transport Police (BTP) and Chiltern Railway who answered questions from a live and virtual audience throughout the interactive broadcast. We also met Tom Hubbard who featured in the You vs Train campaign with Network Rail.

The LIVE CHAT is always open next to the video player so feel free to leave us a question or comment and we’ll get it forwarded to the panel in advance of the broadcast.

Broadcast length = 40 mins

This broadcast is suitable for ages 11 and upwards.

  • Lisa Lewis

    Community Safety Manager, Network Rail

My name is Lisa Lewis, I am a Community Safety Manager on LNW and have worked at Network Rail for 13 years.  My role is to ensure communities understand the real life dangers when on or near the railway.  I spend a lot of time speaking with children and young adults in schools, youth centres and pupil referral units about rail safety.  I also speak with children who have been injured on or around the railway alongside their families and seeing first hand the devastation that can be caused from trespassing on the railway makes events like Rail Safety Live even more important to ensure people know the dangers and can help us spread the message.  I work closely with the British Transport Police and Train Operating Companies to ensure a joined up approach to always putting our passengers first and to ensure everyone travelling on or near the railway stays safe at all times.

  • Nicola Uijen

Director, Route Health, Safety, Environment & Quality, Network Rail

Nicola is the Director of Route Safety Health Environment and Quality.

  • Nick Jordan

In his current role of Project Manager Change, Nick is leading on culture change initiatives that will make Europe’s safest railway even safer.

  • Victoria Pond

HSQE Manager – Security, Chiltern Railways

My name is Victoria Pond I work for Chiltern Railways as the lead for security.  I have been with CRCL for 15 months, this is my first role within rail.  I like to think I have settled in and feel like part of the furniture already.

My role is very diverse and covers a vast area (the whole of Chiltern) to ensure we are compliant with DfT regulations, which are set by the government.

Part of my role is also police liaison, I work daily with BTP to ensure that everyone feels safe whilst travelling on the network.

Another part of my role, is educational talks for children and young adults.  I have a lot of experience and being a mum to two daughters, makes it even more important.  I believe every child should have someone to guide them in making the right decisions in life and help them to be confident with that decision.

Keeping safe on the network is even more important as peer pressure can take children, even adults of track and that is when accidents happen or even worse.

Role: PCSO at Birmingham New Street for the British Transport Police.

How long I have been there: 20 months.

Previous job: Music Teacher & Football coach.

  • Saba Tarif

  • Stephen Kay

    Local Operations Manager, Network Rail

My Name is Stephen Kay, and I am from Crewe in Cheshire.  I am 35 years old, and work for Network Rail as a LOM (Local Operations Manager).

I have been on the railway Eighteen years this year, starting my career on Crewe station dispatching and announcing trains.

In 2004, I transferred to Network Rail to be a signaller, working in a lever frame signal box.  From there I progressed up through the grades eventually signalling trains at the main box Crewe Signalling Centre.

I then made the step to progress to become a MOM (Mobile Operations Manager), a role that is reactive to incidents on the railway.  As a MOM I attended broken down trains, point failure, crossing failures, amongst numerous other things, but the worst incident to attend by far is a fatality.

I have been doing Railway safety talks for over a year now and thoroughly enjoy it.  It is great to pass on my experience, in the knowledge it is helping keep people safe and preventing future trespass, injury or at worst death.
